REVIEW – Midlands Forest Lodge Nottinghman Road

There is something truly special about escaping to the Midlands as a family , the slower pace, the crisp air, the towering trees and the feeling that, for just a little while, life becomes wonderfully simple again.

This past weekend, we packed up the boys and headed to Midlands Forest Lodge for a much-needed family getaway, and from the moment we arrived, it felt like we could finally exhale.

Nestled amongst the beautiful forests of the Midlands, the lodge offers a peaceful and relaxed atmosphere that immediately encourages you to slow down and reconnect and not only with nature, but with each other too.

We stayed in both Chalet 11 and Chalet 12, which worked perfectly for our family setup.

Chalet 11 featured a comfortable double bedroom with its own shower, along with a compact kitchenette equipped with a mini fridge and oven ,toaster , kettle and microwave ,ideal for a weekend stay.

One of the things we loved most was the layout, where an outside balcony walkway led to a second bedroom with two single beds and its own shower. It gave everyone enough space while still feeling cozy and connected.

Chalet 12 had a lovely warm feel to it, with a small lounge area that included a TV and an extra single bed, as well as a kitchenette ( including all gadgets like the kitchen in Chalet 11) , before leading into the double bedroom and shower. Both chalets were simple, comfortable and perfectly suited to a relaxed family weekend away.
We are super fussy about linen and clean crisp sheets and Midlands Forest Lodge delivered!

Breakfast is available at an additional cost, and it was absolutely worth it. There is something about enjoying a warm, hearty breakfast in the chilly Midlands air that just feels comforting and nostalgic. BONUS was that Breakie is served on Hot Plates!

But honestly, some of our favourite moments were the simplest ones.

Most of our time was spent gathered in the communal lounge around the roaring fireplace. We played board games, chatted for hours, enjoyed an easy braai together and simply embraced the rare gift of uninterrupted family time.

In a world where everyone is constantly connected to screens, notifications and busy schedules, one of the most refreshing parts of the weekend was the limited WiFi access. WiFi is only available near the reception area, and surprisingly, that became one of the highlights for us. It allowed us to truly disconnect from technology and reconnect with each other instead.

The boys explored, we slowed down, conversations lasted longer, and nobody was distracted by devices.

It reminded us how important these moments are.

And as I always say ,the people working at a venue can completely shape your experience.

The staff at Midlands Forest Lodge were incredibly warm and welcoming, but three special ladies truly stood out: Nona, Thembi and Zandile. Their kindness, friendliness and genuine care made our stay feel even more memorable and personal. It is always the human touch that leaves the biggest impression.

If you are someone who loves birdlife, walking trails, forest surroundings, peace and quiet, and the chance to simply breathe again, then Midlands Forest Lodge is definitely worth considering for your next getaway.

Whether you are planning a family weekend, a quiet couples retreat or simply a few nights away from the busyness of everyday life, this little hidden gem in the Midlands offers the perfect opportunity to rest, reconnect and make beautiful memories together.

We left feeling refreshed, grateful and reminded that sometimes the best family moments are found in the quietest places.
